Frequently asked questions.
Is ReadingWrite! a tuition service?
No, ReadingWrite! is not a tuition service.
We offer one-on-one intervention support for children struggling with functional literacy, our focus is not on educating our clients as this is the role of schools and the education system. We provide an evidence-based functional literacy intervention program.
Our consultants, work closely with parents and their child to identify the root cause of your child's difficulties with functional literacy and develop a personalised intervention plan to address those specific needs. We aim to assess the parent and the child to reach a level of functional literacy that allows the child to independently communicate with their peers and the wider community.
Who can ReadingWrite! help?
Students with difficulty learning to read, spell and write.
Students who are still struggling to grasp the initial alphabet sounds.
Students with school exposure however have fallen behind peers or are at risk of falling behind.
Students refusing to read or write.
Students who become emotional when asked to read
Students who avoid all tasks requiring reading.
Parents are concerned and do not know what to do.
Students who do everything they can to avoid school and/or homework.
Students who constantly tell you they are stupid or lack intelligence with academic skills.
Students who will fly off the handle or misbehave to avoid being noticed as having difficulty.
How much will it cost to get my child reading if I follow your recommendations?
Initially, we offer a 20 minute free phone or zoom consultation to discuss your concerns and to identify if we will be able to assist your child.
From here if you decide to further investigate with us we will offer a 2-3 hour assessment session which will be conducted over one or two appointments, depending on your child’s specific needs.
If at this stage you decide to continue with the intervention program then the ongoing cost will include a weekly 50 minute consultations with a literacy intervention consultant either on Zoom or in person. This cost varies depending on whether your child is able to join a small group or if they will be attending one-on-one sessions.
In both cases parents/carers are required to be available to participate in the consultations as the content covered is delivered at a level beyond your child’s current skill set and they will need you to also learn the content so that you are able to assist them with completing their four days of home practice tasks.
How much time will I need to implement the intervention to help my child?
The length of each child’s program differs from 6 - 30 weeks. Most being 12-15 weeks. Each week will require:
1 x 50 minutes with ReadingWrite! Literacy Consultant (either in person or online)
4 x 30-45 minutes sessions between consultations to complete practice intervention tasks at home with parent/carer.
What if I'm not good at literacy myself?
Having great literacy skills isn’t necessary. You will learn different things with your child. However if you do have any struggles, we are more than happy to support you through the process so that both of you feel empowered to make the program work for your child.
What if I'm neurodivergent?
This is not a challenge in our view. ReadingWrite! has an extensive history of working with neurodiversity. Many of the people we love are neurodivergent.
What if I need more help / have questions between the sessions?
Simply send us a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Otherwise bring any questions you have along to your next consultation and we will sort them out.
How long will I have access to the material?
All physical materials needed will be provided and are yours to keep with exception of borrowed reading books which are free to use while completing the intervention program.
My significant other isn't supportive of trying something else in our home, should I still bother?
Absolutely! This isn’t about doing something nice or a luxury. These are essential skills that everyone needs to live a full and independent life. Book a free 20 minute call for both of you to attend and we can discuss any questions you both may have.
